― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Possessed
A social and political satire, a psychological drama, and a large-scale tragedy, The Possessed or the Devils was first published in 1871- 72 by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. Our edition features the 1916 English translation by Constance Garnett.
Inspired by the true story of a political murder that hurried Russians in 1869, Fyodor Dostoevsky conceived of The Possessed or the Devils as a "novel-pamphlet" in which he would say everything about the plague of materialist ideology that he saw infecting his native land. What emerged was a prophetic and ferociously funny masterpiece of ideology and murder in pre-revolutionary Russia.
